about

‘New Gods’ marks the welcome return of the London artist whose music draws from a wide-ranging palette of influences including jazz, soul, hip-hop, house and electronica and has previously seen him handpicked by Bonobo to provide support on his World Tour. ‘New Gods’ perfectly encapsulates what Catching Flies is all about and sees him collaborating with two of London’s brightest stars: Jay Prince and Gilles Peterson favourite Oscar Jerome.

‘New Gods’ is electronica at its best. Even though Catching Flies has for the most part been relishing working alone on his forthcoming material, he rates this collaboration with singer Oscar Jerome and rapper Jay Prince as one of his favourite experiences in the studio. The results certainly speak of a rich and fertile working relationship; as a song it flows easily, even as the structure is ambitious, taking the listener through rap lyrics of complex self-realisation, rich layers of electronic texture, a section of gorgeous jazz guitar/bass interplay, and into a final coda that drifts dreamily to a standstill as if in loosened gravity – all in the space of little more than three minutes. Speaking on ‘New Gods,’ Catching Flies explains:

“The track represents a breakthrough moment in the sense that I felt super inspired again after a long period of feeling frustrated with my own process. Collaboration felt like a good way to fix this… and it did! Oscar had just released one of his debut tracks ‘Give Back What You Stole From Me’ and I remember hearing it on Gilles Peterson’s show and it really caught my ear because it sounded fresh and I hadn’t heard anything like it. I hit him up and we did a session. I also wanted to have a verse in there so hit up Jay – I’ve been a fan of his work for a while. Everything came together very naturally. The tune is essentially about reaching equilibrium in your own life… fresh starts and bettering yourself – so all things considered it felt pretty poignant and really resonated with me.”

The release is taken from Catching Flies forthcoming project, which is due later in the year. 2018-2019 looks set to see Catching Flies continue to carve himself out as an artist well and truly in his own lane.
